The Sun’s Space-Time Warping Pavilion
The Sun’s Space Time Warping Pavilion is a design proposal for a large public art pavilion that celebrates one of the big ideas in science called, the warping of space-time. The warping of space-time first proposed by Albert Einstein predicted the curvature of space-time by massive objects such as the sun, in his theory of general relativity.
Inspired by that idea and by 2-D graphic images of how the fabric of space might look when it is distorted by objects like the sun, I created this pavilion as a public gathering place where people might be attracted to it, symbolically like the attraction of gravity, caused by the warping of space-time.
I want to make public art that inspires people to think more comprehensively about the world, and universe around them. I want to help bring big ideas in science to their attention through new and exciting forms of public art that are aesthetically developed around the ways in which these ideas really function in the world we inhabit.
The Sun’s Space-Time Warping Pavilion would be made of painted steel, with a concrete base. The black grid portion of the structure symbolically refers to the fabric of space-time being warped by the massive yellow object on top called, the sun. At the bottom of the portion of the grid that has been distorted, there is a place for visitors to sit around the tip of the distortion, and hopefully contemplate the wonders of the universe.
