Made For The Shade

Made For The Shade

Made For The Shade is a series of public art/architecture projects designed to provide shade for the communities in which the structures are installed, and in some cases generate electricity from the sun, and capture rainwater for those communities.

All of the structures are designed to be prefabricated and made of painted wood and/or steel. Most can be installed with little or minimal foundation requirements. They can be assembled almost anywhere but the preferred locations are in public parks.

The creation of the Made For The Shade structures was inspired by the heating up of the earth through global climate change, and the growing need for places where people can retreat from the heat of the sun.

The Hanging Shade Tree Pavilion is designed to be made of painted steel, mounted onto a concrete base. It consists of a series of hanging containers into which shade trees are planted. In this whimsical configuration, the containers and the trees are elevated above the shaded public space below.

The Deconstructed Shade Pavilion is designed to be pre-fabricated from painted steel and fabric. It consists of a series of eight rectangular frames supported by fifteen columns. Each of the frames has been subdivided into a series of fabric covered triangular frames that have been folded open into symmetrical configurations. These fabric covered frames shade the space below.

The painted steel Solar Electric Pavilion consists of a series of arches and beams that support an array of solar panels that shade the space below and generate electricity from the sun for the local community. The structure also supports an observation platform located at the center of the pavilion.

The Solar Rain Funnels Pavilion is made of painted steel and concrete. It consists of a series of seven prefabricated funnel shaded structures, each of which have an array of solar panels mounted around the perimeter of each funnel. The solar panels generate electricity from the sun for the local community, and also capture and store rainwater for use by the local community. The funnel-shaded structures shade the space below, which contains a series of gardens.

A Pavilion For The People (made of painted steel) consists of a series of forty-four gable frame sections made of steel tubes, that make up most of the structure with eight of those used to support solid roofs. There are two large solar panels mounted onto the south side of the roofs that make electricity from the sun for the local community. The roofs and the gables shade the space below that also shelters two large tables and seats for the visitors.

The Solar Ceiling Fan Pavilion is made of painted steel and concrete. It consists of four large solar panels mounted on top of the structures roof. Under the roof there are twelve ceiling fans powered by the solar panels. The roof and the ceiling fans shade and cool the space below that contains a series of tables and chairs.

The Zigzag Pavilion is designed to be made of painted wood. It consists of five large identical structures that support ten large solar panels that make electricity from the sun for the local community. Each of the structures is also clad with slats that along with the solar panels shade the space below. A series of cylindrical seats are placed below the shade structures for the visitors.
