Our Mobile Home is a functional art structure designed for people who want to use their art, instead of just looking at it. The Mobile Home structure is 28 feet tall, and 12 feet square. It is made of prefabricated painted and insulated steel. The design originated from a series of small sculptures called, the House as a Metaphor. In this series of sculptures the iconic house shape is played with in a variety of abstracted contexts, juxtaposing the house with other recognizable symbols. Most of the pieces are monochrome, and use a single material for both the house and the additions to it, which range from stilts, wheels and railroad tracks to clouds and crosses. Minimal and conceptual, these sculptures are meant to interrogate the meaning of the house symbol by exploring how simple interventions affect its interpretation. In this case, a series of zigzag legs support the symbolic house and visually make it appear to be moving. A long staircase leads from the ground and into the house through a gray colored door. Inside there are three large windows and a seat that extends around the interior perimeter of the structure. Our Mobile Home functions as a playful sculpture, in and around which it’s owners can hang out, drink some wine, or just relax and enjoy inhabiting a fanciful place, unlike any they had encountered before.
