This is a proposal for a public art installation that consists of 36 columns that support 36 sun tracking photovoltaic panels all mounted onto a large plaza, creating a kind of solar shade pavilion. The piece is called the Sun Dance Plaza, and it is designed to celebrate alternative energy use through the creation of public art. Of course the energy produced by the solar panels would be used by the community in which the installation is built. The fun part of the installation is that periodically, the solar panels would move up and down, and back and forth in different ways preforming a kind of sun dance to entertain the people below. This movement could be accompanied by synchronized electronic sounds. After a short period of this, the solar panels would return to just slowly tracking the sun. This dance might only occur when people are present, and might be patterned after their movements? An exciting visual part of the installation will be when the solar panels are moving, and casting their shadows onto the plaza below in ever changing patterns.
