The Red Pavilion

The Red Pavilion

The Red Pavilion was designed as a special place in which to retreat from the normal world of boring rectilinear spaces. It is a place in which to meditate, read, write, play with your electronic device, and/or just sit, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the unexpected zigzag geometry.

The structure is made of sustainably grown wood that has been colored with eco-friendly red paint. It consists of a series of slatted panels of various lengths that are hinged together end to end into six zigzag shaped arches. Three of the shorter arches are connected together side to side in a way that forms a kind of structurally sound truss. The other three longer arches are also connected together side to side and are positioned over the top of the shorter three arches. Seats are built into the bases of four of the arches. The slatted panel canopy shades the space below and casts an amazing array of ever changing shadows onto the ground, and onto anyone who enters the Red Pavilion.
