The Interactive Fragmented Cube

The Interactive Fragmented Cube

The Interactive Fragmented Cube is a public art sculpture project that incorporates a high degree of interactivity into its design, by allowing the visitors to physically manipulate the shape and space of the sculpture. The basic wood and painted steel cube has been fabricated from a series of segments that (in its closed position) form a complete cube. There are two moveable segments on the top of the cube, and three around the perimeter. Each of these segments are hinged to the portion of the cube that has not been detached.

Each of the hinged segments can be moved by the visitors into many different combinations from the closed to the open positions. This interaction with the physical cube can produce an amazing variety of complex alternative shapes and spaces, all derived from the simple cube form. Of course the original segmentation of the cube dictates the final complexity of the altered versions.

The Interactive Fragmented Cube is one in a series of public art projects I have created that explore ways in which art in general, and specifically public art, can become more interactive and participatory. Many of these projects have also celebrated the aesthetics of transformation, like the Fragmented Cube. Transformation through interactivity can be a powerful way in which to elevate the sophistication of many art forms, especially public art forms.
