Fragmented
Fragmented is a series of photomontages that explore ways in which to depict the feeling all humans have from time to time, of being disconnected from their surroundings. Feeling that can arise from deep thinking about issues in ones life that are unrelated to the landscape in which we are at the moment. The fragmented images of each of these people, whether shown alone or with others, were created in a computer. Each of these people were photographed first separated from their surroundings. Those images were then isolated in the computer and manipulated by slicing each of the people up into pieces and moving the slices back and forth to simulate images that are often seen on a TV screen, when the digital signal is breaking up. The isolated broken images of the people were then placed back into various landscapes. The use of this kind of broken digital image seems to be very appropriate for the depiction of the emotional state of mind that is being presented. Like the broken digital signal that fragments in and out of existence, our connection with our surrounding also fragments in and out of our consciousness, as we contemplate unrelated issues in our lives.
