Ellen’s High Desert Retreat (which explores the relationship between art and architecture) was created for Ellen Jantzen, who is a well-known digital photo artist. The wood and stucco structure was designed to be placed onto her high desert property near Los Angeles California.
Ellen was searching for a retreat that she could visit on the weekends for inspiration for her own creative endeavors, as a digital photo artist.
The concept for the design of the structure started with a basic long rectangular shaped tube. Parts of the tube were then peeled back and away from the perimeter in order to open the interior to various dynamic views of the surrounding landscape.
The entire structure can be rotated on its base so that the views framed by the peeled back parts of the original rectangular tube can always be changed.
In this way, Ellen’s High Desert Retreat becomes a kind of telescope that can continually frame different views of the surrounding landscape for her personal artistic contemplation and inspiration.
