An Artifact For The future
An Artifact for the Future is a design proposal for a public art sculpture made of painted steel. Two large solar cell panels are mounted on the top of the sculpture along with a large dish antenna. The solar cells convert sunlight into electricity, which is stored in the eight silver colored, sphere shaped batteries, mounted at the base of the sculpture. The electricity is used to light the sculpture at night, and to power the antenna, with the excess sent into the local power grid. The large dish antenna is used to search for extraterrestrial life with the results continually sent to the SETI Institute for evaluation.
An Artifact For The Future is part of a series of public art projects that are designed to embrace various functions beyond pure aesthetics. In this case, the revealed function of generating electricity from the sun, while searching for signs of extraterrestrial life, conceptually reinforce the visual aesthetics which are inspired by satellite technology.
