Energetics 4

Energetics 4

Energetics 4 is a series of photo-based images that celebrate the beauty of complexity, generated through the manipulation of a simple three-dimensional form. As an artist I have always been intrigued with phenomena in nature like fractals, where a basic often simple form is repeated over and over again at different scales in order to produce an extremely complex looking object, such as a tree.

In this series of images, I first created a small three-dimensional object that I felt could produce a wide range of complex looking images, after being manipulated in my computer. I photographed the object, placed the photograph of it into my computer and isolated the object from its original background. I then manipulated the isolated image in various ways to create the final montage.

In most cases the manipulation involved changing the colors, cutting the original image of the object into pieces, and reassembling the pieces back together in different ways. Often the pieces were doubled and reassembled into new symmetrical forms. Sometimes the pieces were reassembled into asymmetrical forms, and in some cases the reassembled symmetrical and asymmetrical pieces were layered with progressive changes in the scale of each layer. Other montages were created by layering many different manipulated forms on top of each other until the shape of the original object was completely undetectable in a new field of visual complexity.
