The New Cathedrals

The New Cathedrals

The New Cathedrals is a series of photomontages that conceptually play with the idea of creating new images from the manipulation of existing images of churches. Cathedrals are usually much larger and considered more important structures then churches.

Photos of churches were taken with a digital camera. Those photos were placed into a computer where the churches were isolated from their original backgrounds. The isolated church images were then manipulated in various ways with the computer. In most cases the manipulation was done by cutting the original churches up into various parts and reassembling those parts back into much larger and complex versions of the original church image.

This reassembling process also usually incorporated multiple images of the same church placed together in different ways in order to form gigantic structures. Those structures are not meant to look functional, but rather to refer to fanciful dreamlike versions of the original churches.
