Monument to a Tree
“Monument to a Tree” is a proposal for a large public art installation. It was designed to celebrate the existence of trees in a magical and mysterious way that inspires visitors to imagine stories about what the specific meaning behind the design of the monument might be. It is interactive in the sense that visitors could climb up the cone shaped concentric step center portion of the structure to visit the tree growing out of the top of the monument, but with some degree of difficulty since the steps are much farther apart then conventional stairs. This portion of the monument refers to steps found on many of the great monuments from the past such as the Egyptian and Mayan pyramids. Conceptually, you have to suffer a bit to commune directly with the tree.
What is the meaning behind the four large walls projecting out from the center of the cone shaped staircase, topped with a large black colored ring? Why are there four yellow tubes projecting out from the edges of each of the four large walls, also, why are there four large curved vent-like projections radiating out from the center of the monument?
The hope is to create a new kind of public art installation that functions on many levels to celebrate things in our society that are often overlooked and/or understood for their extreme importance relative to our collective survival.
