A Cube's Entropic Progression

A Cube's Entropic Progression

A Cube's Entropic Progression is a public art project that explores ways in which public art can be used to increase the publics’ awareness of and enthusiasm for science. The large scale of the sculpture was an especially important aspect of the project because it symbolically emphasizes the importance of the scientific concept that inspired the work.

This large sculpture was inspired by the concept in physics of the arrow of time and the progression of things toward disorder or entropy. In this case, the progression is presented as a sequence from a simple cube toward a disordered version of itself. According to physicists, any motion allowed by the laws of physics also allows for the reverse of that motion.

That statement inspired the method by which the cube was disordered. The first cube is presented with no flaws at all in its six faces. The second cube has two flaws that are formed by hinging two pieces of the cube out from two different faces. The third and most disordered cube has many pieces hinged out form every face. The inside and outside of the cubes have been colored differently in order to graphically emphasis the symbolic change from order to disorder.

The method of disordering the cube with hinges is important because the hinges move in both directions, in and out, or back and forth. As a result, the disordering of the cube can be reversed symbolically and physically, suggesting that the arrow of time could be reversed from disorder back to order.
