The Circular Formations Pavilion

The Circular Formations Pavilion

The Circular Formations Pavilion is a large painted steel sculpture, designed to function as a public art gathering place. The ideal location for the pavilion is in a public park. Thirty-two eight-foot diameter steel angle rings were used to form the majority of the sculpture. Each of the rings were connected together ring to ring, and/or with straight sections of steel angles. Some of the rings were fitted with curved sections of painted sheet steel in order to partially enclose some of the structure. Some of those partially enclosed cylindrical shaped sections were fitted with painted wood curved benches. Painted wood planks were used to form a series of platforms and walkways leading to and from the pavilion.

The aesthetics of the Circular Formation Pavilion evolved from the kit of prefabricated parts used to make the structure. The same kit of parts can be used to form many other structures that vary widely in size and shape. In every case, the intent is to celebrate the unexpected beauty of complexity that can be derived from a small number of simple components.
