The Sun Rock

The Sun Rock

The Sun Rock is part of my Energetic Art series of sculptures and pavilions that explore ways in which art can be used to help inspire people to become more aware of and engaged in a sustainable, and environmentally conscious way of life.  All of the sculptures and pavilions in this series either collect and store energy form the sun and/or from the wind, and/or collect and store rainwater for the communities in which they are installed.

The Sun Rock plays with the fact that all of the earth’s surface actually gathers and stores energy from the sun in one form or another. Even the rocks collect heat from the sun and store that heat for a time. In the case of The Sun Rock sculpture, energy from the sun is converted from sunlight into electricity, by the large solar cell panel installed nearby. A black colored pipe attached to the back of the solar panel directs all of the solar electricity into a real electric battery contained inside of the rock. The electricity is however symbolically stored in the rock where it can be accessed by visitors through various portals mounted around the perimeter. The electricity can be used by the visitors in various ways, such as in the operation of their various electronic devices.
