Gun Faces

Gun Faces

Gun Faces is a series of photomontages that play with the idea of turning guns into comical faces that purposefully establish a stark contrast to the seriousness of the weapons. These startling images were created by first photographing various kinds of pistols and rifles. Those photos were then placed into a computer where the guns were isolated from their backgrounds. The isolated gun images were altered by cutting specific parts off, duplicating them, and placing the two identical images together face to face into a symmetrical configuration. Images of human eyes were then added to the symmetrical gun configurations in places that best referred to a human face. In the same way, specific places on the symmetrical gun images were colored red in order to symbolically refer to mouths.

It has always been very interesting to me how nearly any object, when made into a symmetrical image, can visually refer to a human face. Initially guns seemed to be unlikely objects that could be converted into face like images, but in the end, I think they worked out very well.
