Meditation Pod

Meditation Pod

The Meditation Pod was designed as a prefabricated, modular, re-locatable structure that can be made of painted wood, and/or metal. This version was designed to be made primarily from painted wood, with metal covered plywood vertical walls. There are seven 4 inch by 6 inch thick painted wood frames projecting out and up from each of the four vertical sides of the pod. These can be removed or kept in place during transit. The pod has its own built-in 64 square foot wood floor with four legs that can support the structure on nearly any kind of terrain with little or no foundation.

There are four large clerestory windows and air exhaust vents around the upper perimeter of the pod, and one large skylight on top. Six air intake vents are also built into the lower portion three of the vertical walls. All of these vents can be adjusted and/or closed to accommodate different seasons of the year.

The door leading to the interior has a small round window built into it. Inside there are three padded benches built into three of the vertical walls. A large spherical shaped white lamp hangs from the center skylight. Power requirements for the pod can be supplied by solar panels and/or by tying it into the local power grid.

The aesthetics of the Meditation Pod were inspired symbolically by the aesthetics of chapels. The intention was to create a special place in which one might feel safe and inspired to retreat from the stress, anxiety, depression, and dependence on digital devices, in order to meditate on distress, and the reconnection to themselves and others.
