The site used to be a historically important steel factory, Chonggang, in the suburbs of Chongqing city. It houses an existing Chongqing Industrial Museum, which is popular amongst tourists but the entire site lacks vitality, occupied mainly by obsolete factory buildings. The new design aims to reconnect the site with surrounding developments, create a brand new industrial character image, rebuild public spaces and activate the entire site with commercial activities, plazas and landscaped nodes. We created a ringed multi-level circulation around the existing museums, which can be integrated with retail and the new developments of the HQ office for Baowu, garden-style offices and a boutique hotel. Due to height differences within the site, we created interesting three-dimensional walkways to link various functions and public nodes within the site, as well as to bring pedestrians from the hilltop to the riverfront. The design inspiration comes from the old railway tracks within the site, linking the individual blocks with continuous fluid roofs and abstracting horizontal elements onto the building facade.
