Two words that define the School of Architecture & Urban Planning at UW-Milwaukee (SARUP) are “relevance” and “innovation,” reflected in the opportunities and challenges that our rapidly rebuilding lakefront hometown has provided.
The metropolitan region that SARUP calls "home" has become a laboratory for our students, providing real-world case studies with real sites, real clients and communities, and real challenges and problems that enrich academic experience through the immediacy and relevance of the work they undertake. Over the years, the work our students have done has changed the skyline of Milwaukee and its surrounding regions. Projects such as the Milwaukee Public Market, the Marcus pavilion and the demolition of the Park East freeway, have all begun as student design projects and filtered into the professional community.
At the same time, the school has steadily used innovation to further the academic experience. In partnership with local firms and practitioners, we have implemented “sponsored studios,” which bring students in daily contact with best practices in professional practice and in design.
With the support of generous donors, we have instituted two major awards, the Marcus Prize, which honors emerging architects for their work to date, along with their promise of greatness in the future, and the Urban Edge Award, which recognizes excellence in urban design and the ability of individuals to create major, positive change within the public realm. The school has hosted the talents of Tatiana Bilbao, MVRDV, Diébédo Francis Kéré, Jeanne Gang, Elizabeth Diller, and DIRT Studio, to name a few, bringing students together to experience the forward-reaching ideas and innovative design and construction techniques used by world-renowned, award-winning minds.
Our award winning, international faculty are comprised of groundbreaking designers and planners, established researchers and esteemed educators who bring their diverse vision and shared dedication to a school focused on the complexities and opportunities of our changing world. Together, we develop scholars and designers who successfully leverage a variety of design processes and ideologies in the service of creating better communities.
