Week’s Summary
This week I worked on a few projects. I picked up redlines and looked over drawings to make sure everything was correct for the project Lowry SNF. They were the construction documents that were being sent out on Wednesday to the contractor to be priced, after which the building process will start eventually. The main focus for me this week was working on the OMG (Oregon Medical Group) Country Club Clinic in Eugene, Oregon. This is the beginning of the project, and therefore at pretty much the initial stage of design development. I assisted Annie, gathering inspirational images and helping start three different finish schemes to show the client next week. One of the schemes is more neutral with bright colors; one is warm; and the third is a cool scheme. As part of the process, I looked up and picked materials that I thought would work and fit the various schemes. I contacted a lot of reps this week, and ordered several materials in order to fit the tight schedule, since the client meeting is next week. At the end of the week, I also Photoshopped a rendering for Little Adventist Hospital OR.
Week’s Focus:
Boulder Associates keeps up to date on current furnishings, fixtures, and equipment. Every designer and architect has an excellent relationship with reps. Every week, the interior designers have a lunch meeting with reps who come in from various companies to inform and educate us about new materials, or new pieces of furniture. Similarly, reps email us if a material has been discontinued. If it has, they try to find something that is similar or suitable for our design work. If we don’t use certain resources, we contact the reps and ask them to come to the office and update the library and remove the literature that we don’t use. At Boulder Associates, there is one room dedicated to flooring, a tile library closet, and then the rest of the materials and furniture literature is in one area with an island on which schemes can be laid out.
Getting to Know Someone New:
We had another Second Friday event at Boulder Associates. This time it was the owner, Connie, and manager, Adrianna, of Ramble on Pearl, an active lifestyle store that is run by the non-profit organization called Boulder Treasures. This store employs and teaches skills to adults with developmental disabilities through paid apprenticeships in order to secure full-time independent employment in the future.
It was very interesting, and also inspiring to learn about a store down the street from our office that is trying to make a difference and improve the lives of adults who have developmental disabilities, and make sure they secure jobs. They said that 85% of adults with developmental disabilities are not employed, but are in fact capable of being employed.
