    summary.

Monday, I had a meeting with Barbara, Stuart, and Doug McCarty on the new build project (the one I have been working on all summer). We discussed some various design decisions that would need to be made during the week and were given the task of completing a rather lengthy list of ‘to-dos’ for Dough on Friday. We had a design luncheon where Barbara presented everything she saw/did at NeoCon. This was a neat experience because I had seen the Merchandise Mart from our trip to Chicago during second year, but I had no idea how crazy packed it got during the convention. She had really great pictures of new things being introduced to the market. Tuesday and Wednesday I worked mostly on the Revit model for the new build. This was a little challenging for me… I do not consider myself to be proficient in Revit by any means and I hate when I can’t figure things out immediately. However, there are people in the office who know Revit like the back of their hand, so whenever I needed help, I was able to ask. Thursday I packed a bag of finishes and drawings for Jeff Johnson to take to his meeting. The rest of the day Thursday was spent keeping up with the Revit model and updating it with Stuart in the office.

    focus.

Here at MHM, I would say that the interactions I have seen between staff and client are quite a few things… for one, because of MHM’s long history in Knoxville, they have known and worked with a lot of their clients before. At the same time, I have not seen an unprofessional interaction. It is always friendly business. This is important for several reasons, no matter how well you know your client, when you’re in the office, I think it is important to be professional and to be serious so that people take you seriously/maturely. I think designers and architects are always learning from project to project. We have lunch and learns nearly every week discussing the latest greatest products out there, and with new products, comes a learning curve. Plus, you learn manufacturer’s materials after a while and you begin to learn what to use and what not to use.

    meet someone new.

I worked a lot this week with Stuart Butcher. Stuart has been with McCarty for many years and is an incredibly talented architect. His hand drawings are amazing! It has been fun working with someone SO detail oriented and has changed my way of thinking about things on the small scale quite a bit.
