    Diagramming the City

    By Arjun Bhat

So here was the first assignment in our studio -- to categorize/describe everything that could happen or could have to do with the city in 3 or 4 words (Athens Charter Style). Then diagram the relationship between these words/institutions/abstractions to illustrate their dynamic. This will then be used as somewhat of a take off point to analyze the "ideal city."

The words I used are -- Domain, Interface, Improvisation. Here's my diagram:

Domain (blue) acts as a supportive matrix for the institutions/program/spaces for Interface - where the monitoring/exchange of data/goods occurs. Improvisation moves as a mutative force adapting, hijacking, reusing, or deleting these institutions/spaces/programs as it sees fit. Improvisation can occur in a subtle, rythmic fashion, or abruptly and without warning. Competition/conflict define the nature of the model - distilling and dissolving sectors (both physical and social) to create the city's dynamic.
