rare Research Reserve and Education Centre

As part of PLANT Architect’s overall master plan, the site of the existing 1840s Slit Barn and Farmhouse was identified as a hub for education.

We rezoned the site to suit, and have since completed Phase One additions and renovations to re-purpose the buildings. This work included an addition to the house for new public washrooms, a ground-source heat pump, bio-filter sewage handling, barn renovations, and grounds development. The gravel drop-off and parking area have been carefully planned to conserve the surrounding wetlands, woodlots, and animal habitats.

Phase II renovations include the repair and reinforcement of the existing timber roof structure, and replacement of the existing roofing and doors to transform the Slit Barn into a trailhead and three-season teaching and exhibit space. Phase Three transformed the farmhouse into an Education Centre. The project is AODA compliant.
