Following last week’s look at an opening for a Japanese-speaking Retail Architect at O’Neil Langan Architects, we are using this week’s edition of our Job Highlights series to explore an open role on Archinect Jobs for a Staff Architect at Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity.
Based in Indianapolis, the role calls for an individual “responsible for overseeing the design and modifications of house plans and layouts to provide a cost-effective product that will serve the homebuyers' needs.” Among the requirements for the role are a college degree or commensurate residential construction-related experience with 5-10 years of specifically related experience and education.
Why the role interests us
The open role at Greater Indy Habitat for Humanity offers us the opportunity to look back at the various architectural projects and initiatives undertaken by Habitat for Humanity across the United States. In 2022, we reported on a collaborative design-build project within Mississippi State University where students worked to deliver proposals for the Starkville Area Habitat for Humanity.
News of the collaboration came only two months after it was announced that Habitat for Humanity International would receive a $436 million donation from MacKenzie Scott. As we reported then, the organization planned to use $25 million to address the global housing crisis at scale, with the remaining $411 million set to be distributed among the organization’s local affiliates.
In 2021, meanwhile, Habitat for Humanity Central Arizona completed the first Habitat for Humanity 3D-printed home in the United States. As we had previously reported, the single-story home in Tempe was seen by the project as an important step in their future of delivering affordable housing across the United States.
“While we have found success in building small 3D-printed homes abroad, at 1,700 square feet, this home represents Habitat’s entry into new, innovative space,” said Adrienne Goolsby, senior vice president of U.S. and Canada at Habitat for Humanity International, at the time. “It is the first of its kind in the U.S. and sets the stage for increased capacity through a solution that could be both sustainable and cost-effective.”
