Trahan Architects has unveiled its USA Pavilion design for World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan. The county’s official entry will play host to a slate of exhibitions designed to showcase American scientific exploration and entrepreneurship and will be completed by an official project team that includes HOOD Design, Dot Dash, and several other specialty studios.
Chicago's former Mayor and the current U.S. Ambassador to Japan, Rahm Emanuel, says it will stand as "an embodiment of American spirit." Organizers are expecting approximately 30 million visitors.
Visitors will pass through a ringed wall that surrounds the Expo before entering the pavilion, which is separated into two wings that are connected via a suspended cubic form serving as a skybridge.
Exterior LED screens installed on its facade will broadcast scenes of America’s urban and natural landscapes. The project reuses steel, HVAC systems, and tensile fabric used in structures originally designed for the 2020 Olympic Games. All the materials used will later be dissembled and repurposed elsewhere in line with the Expo's mandate to incorporate the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals into its program.
Outside of the pavilion, a "canyon" formed by the mirrored cube and LED screens serves to provide a contemplative space for reflection on the "relationship between people, the built world, and the environment."
The New Orleans-based studio's contribution follows Woods Bagot, Adrian Smith+Gordon Gill Architecture, and Biber Architects as the four most recent American entries to the fair.
"Gathering across cultures and world regions to share ideas and learn from each other is essential to building a more understanding and human world. As architects, our mission is to bring people together in spaces that cultivate a greater sense of place and strengthen appreciation for our planet. The USA Pavilion at Expo 2025 offers a rare opportunity to explore these critical issues and engage in a global conversation on the future of our environment and our cities," Trahan Architects founder Trey Trahan described as their inspiration for the design.
Carlo Ratti Associati and Coldefly also recently announced their co-design for France’s Expo 2025 pavilion.
The six-month exhibition opens on April 13, 2025.
