Several Midwest practices are joining forces for a timely renovation project at Cleveland’s Progressive Field.
Kansas City-based Manica Architecture is now teaming up with Ohio’s own Moody Nolan for the multi-year project with additional help from Cleveland-based studios Van Auken Akins and Robert P. Madison International, who will cover the interior renovations and construction support respectively.
The renovation will include a reworking of the upper deck concourse and seating area behind home plate, the left-field Terrace Club, and the team’s clubhouse and front office areas. The erstwhile Jacobs Field was considered a forebearer for a new breed of well-integrated “destination” baseball stadiums when it opened in 1994.
“We feel very fortunate to live in a community that is unified in maintaining momentum in Northeast Ohio and building for a better tomorrow,” Guardians owner Paul Dolan said in a statement. “We take very seriously the role we can play in maximizing the potential of this great city, and we are confident that this agreement will create a more compelling fan experience and keep this facility modern and relevant for many more years to come.”
The team is undergoing a radical shift in its public image after deciding only last year to officially change its name, which had been with the franchise since 1914, in response to a sea change and public criticism that the former moniker was offensive to Native Americans.
Now, with the help of Moody Nolan, oft-considered one of the leading voices for change in the industry, the Guardians will look to continue its successful partnership with the city through at least 2036, when its newly-extended lease option is set to expire.
Per the team’s press release: “Through continued conversations with community leaders and industry experts, the Guardians and its management team will continue the ongoing process of achieving its community benefit goals for economic and workplace inclusion, career pathway support and community engagement, and will maintain a transparent communications plan to keep all stakeholders aware of progress.”
