The new headquarter building of the dutch publisher PCM in Amsterdam will get an OMA design, according to an article in the newspaper volkskrant. Big image of the foamcore model.
foam should be used for good, not evil. this looks like a stack of left over chunks of foam I have stacked on a shelf in my office. jesus. fOMA strikes again.
Eight pieces of blue foam (which is very different than foam core) does not a scheme make. Reserve judgment until something a bit more refined is done.
Rem's ability to startle, shock and generally polarise public opinion is refreshing in a time when starchitects are commissioned (and expected) to churn out the same, stale and soggy fare all over the world.
Whether one likes it or not is unimportant. You have to hand it to Rem for continuing to ask questions that everybody else has either overlooked, discarded, or which simply aren't fashionable anymore.
OMA better has a REASON for this ... i can be patient; they need to justify a lot of things for sure. Ofcourse we're missing on the interiors here ... so we may still be able to prevent a disaster !
if you look at it in terms of architecture history, there are some (most likely intentional) ironies here. base-middle-cap, the perfect sullivan model of the skyscraper, but with the middle becoming less important than the storefront base and the penthouse offices. the 'body' of the building is almost atrophied, a scaffolding supporting the top. indication that the public and the corporate management are the most impt? the trimming of middle management?
curious how this will develop. i remember my first response to the early seattle library presentations. this could be similar. the model gives no sense of transparency/solid, textures, etc.
expect that oma put this out there to elicit just the sort of outrage that some of you are expressing...
I wouldn't put it past FOMA to think that it's really edgy and ironic to design a rubbish post-post-modern project as a parody of the 'perfect' sullivan model. It's insane that some people here are rushing to put their noses at rem's ass level by praising his refreshingness and shockingness for being part of designing something that architects and other mere mortals would clearly find aberent, abhorent, and generally disgusting.
I'm just sad that that big hunk at the top is going to throw a huge amount of its site (not to mention the building itself below the shelf) into shadow. I mean, sunshine and light aren't exactly at a surplus in holland.
Hi
That leave you with no doubt that things need to change, guess there are nothing but these blocks of polysturene ,no sketch no renderings no detail.
Now I tried to make the same thing in Solids but sorry I couldn't keep it so boring afterall ;
Hi
It shuldn't work like that --- actors shuldn't become architects, realy it shuld be the other way around ; achitects shuld turn into comics, I think this with today's gallery of spatecular architects, would be a much happier aproach.
That architects became comics not that artists became architects.

god save us all.
is this one of the signs of the end of time?
If OMA is going to do this... a miracle, we need a miracle...

I guess this is the logical progression for OMA. Neo-Modernism to Neo-Postmodernism. At least they are persistent.

maybe oma hasn't been getting enough press lately. this is a poke in the eye to get us to pay attention. hell no, we won't pomo!
seems like a rip off of an entry to the Chicago Tribune Tower Conpetition in the 20's where some dude proposed a, well, that.
It looks like something to get us talking about OMA. Until they further refine their design and we realize that is actually the complete opposite.
OMA has lost their everlasting-fucking mind...
