Aperture is an urban mixed-use project in the Little Italy district of downtown San Diego. The building consists of 86 residential units, including two levels of luxury penthouses, street level retail and four levels of underground parking. Standing 11 stories high, Aperture makes a commanding presence in Little Italy. Inspired by the vibrancy of the neighborhood, the project flaunts a sophisticated urban design complementing its surroundings while creating a distinctive presence of its own. The facade incorporates a complex yet subtle blending of textures, materials and colors that draw from the area’s neighboring structures. Areas of exposed architectural concrete, anodized aluminum and floor to ceiling glass, and cantilevered balconies and trellises add additional punch to the building’s exterior.
KMA’s in-house team provided the architecture, mechanical and plumbing design as well as the construction documents, construction administration and processed the project through the City development cycle. Work included all aspects of building detailing, design and construction administration.
Aperture was designed entirely implementing an external rainscreen cladding system creating a thermal barrier in the exterior skin resulting in a more energy efficient building.
