San Jose, CA
This was a two building set, designed together but for different owners. Since the design, permitting, and construction would run concurrently, it gave the architects a unique opportunity to coordinate the colors, and details of the buildings.
The owner was planning on replacing the windows in the upper floor apartments of the Payless building. A rich red stock color of wood clad Pella windows was used to add a design statement. That red was used again in the double band parapet trim and the brick base. The red was picked up again in the Print Sharp awning and details. The awnings add variety and interest with their shapes and color as well as the function of weather protection. The second story color band ties the windows together and breaks down the apparent mass of the building to a smaller scale.
