Apartment B

Apartment B

in Vienna, Austria

A furnishing concept for a family. The builders have acquired two opposite apartments on the 4th floor of a Wilhelminian style building in Vienna. The smaller 65 m2 apartment faces the courtyard, the larger, approx. 100 m2 apartment faces the street or the courtyard. By separating part of the stairwell, the two apartments could be connected, giving the opportunity to use these two apartments very flexibly. The larger apartment had to be completely renovated, with the room layout being completely redesigned to meet the needs of the residents. By moving walls, it was possible to create 2 quiet bedrooms on the courtyard side. The anteroom has been reduced. The bathroom was located in the former servant's room (cabinet) on the street side and now has a free-standing bathtub with a view of the surrounding stately Wilhelminian style buildings up to the Naschmarkt flea market and the distant skyline of the Laaer Berg. The kitchen was integrated into the dining room with a free-standing block made of large-format fine stone slabs. A living room, which can be separated as a guest room by means of double doors, connects the anteroom with the dining room. The project offered the chance to develop a very variable, flexible usage concept tailored to the needs of the family. Many variants are possible, from short-term rental and partial owner-occupation by the family of 5 to inhabiting the entire area, to the separate use of the two units. The furnishing concept developed by destilat together with the builders consists of a mix of lovingly restored vintage objects, which are intended to underline the charm of the old building, as well as new furniture, which must correspond to flexible use.
