Like many, you may have assumed that I, Little Ms. Modern, am a Mac person. (Shudder.) “But of course!” you say to yourself as you chuckle over my devastatingly clever columns. Stanford Daily | Previous
I will not be posting these anymore, they are getting worse and worse. She uses the word 'modern' in a way that hurts my eyes. For her everything is modern that is not traditional, or just ugly, I just don't get it.
Anyway, if anyone else would like to, please pick up the weekly posts.
I agree, it seems like she doesn't really understand the meaning of capital-M Modernism, and a lot of her writing just sounds like smartass maternal nagging. Oh, but she had such promise!
Thanks for posting them anyway, sometimes our eyes need to hurt in order to see more clearly...
Quilian, when you said "for her everything is modern that is not traditional", it seems her definition fits perfectly with the first paragraph of the Wikipedia article on "Modernism". Modernism is a continuous movement that encourages us to re-examine the rules and limits of life.
I agree with her article in the way that, through the example of Apple's products, the word "Modern" has slowly degenerated into a style in the eyes of the public. Radical re-thinking happens in all sorts of design, though not always manifested in form. It is not to say that there had never been any modern innovations from Apple, but the company's recent focus on marketing image is just way off to bear with.
I guess somebody got offended since they are baptized in the religion of Mac? Think different, seriously.
I feel she started with a bang but it's slowly been downhill since. Sad face.
This article was much, much, much better than last week's article. I almost swore off of her entirely after the mind-numbing article. This article brings up a a few good points about the importance of functionality in cooperation with aesthetics.
that was funny, granted the writing style is poor...sad when you read blogs with better diction and grammar. Nonetheless the message is clear and perhaps shared Apple seeks to squeeze its users in its corporate kung fu grip, at the loss of your creative freedome...but fuck do they look cool.

Strictly with regards to her argument about IT/tech and the modern (as in future)...
