The Kansas City Royals are advancing a scheme for a new downtown stadium district designed by Populous in a neighborhood called the Crossroads.
Slotted into a 17.5-acre site at the confluence of Grand Boulevard, Locust Street, Truman Road, and 17th Street, the development would offer a connector to the nearby South Loop Link project from OJB Landscape Architecture and BNIM. The proposal calls for an experience-laden "Arts District" to be enacted alongside the new ballpark, with a new hotel, shops, a residential component, and shopping also included.
The site currently includes some undeveloped plots and small businesses adjacent to the Power & Light District. The franchise had previously floated plans for a new stadium (sans entertainment district) in either the East Village or North Kansas City. Cost estimates for the project are between $1–2 billion.
Populous CEO Earl Santee told reporters: "This is my 23rd major league ballpark site, and it’s timing that leads you to the end, and this is the right timing for this site."
"I would say this is the most unique site, one of the most dense sports and entertainment sites we have in America today," he added in a separate announcement put out by Major League Baseball.
The firm says the stadium will be designed to a capacity of 35,000. Their current home, 51-year-old Kauffman Stadium, is considered a landmark in the history of sports design and is a favorite among fans of modern architecture in the Midwest. Developers would still need to acquire much of the land for the plan to move forward.Ballpark Digest says the new stadium's design is more comparable to Target Field in Minneapolis (also designed by Populous) than its 37,903-seat predecessor.
Major League Baseball franchises have been active in the architecture market over the past year with similar proposals from the Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
Plans are for the stadium to be ready in time for Opening Day of the 2028 season.
