As cranes have grown in height and girth, the controls to operate them have intensified in number and complexity...the crane units in use these days have libraries of intricate manuals, packed with details...some operators may not have time to fully understand or read completely. On a good day cranes are exceedingly delicate, complex and dangerous.
On a bad day ...
they run about $100k a month, crane pays for itself pretty fast but then the rest is insurance and knowing you might go to jail for accidental negligence......a site safety guy i knew, usually drunk by noon - couldnt blame him
