Another month has gone by, so that means it's time for the latest Kickstart this! list. Check out what sorts of crowdfunding projects made it onto the April round-up for Archinect's curated Kickstarter page.
The Urban Death Project: Laying Our Loved Ones to Rest
The Urban Death Project presents a sustainable burial process that uses decomposition to transform deceased bodies into soil. In a more spiritual sense, the project allows those laid to rest to eventually grow into a new form of life like a tree, bush, or maybe a field.
Thames Baths - a new, beautiful lido for the River Thames
The Thames Baths by Studio Octopi would add a self-filtering open-air swimming pool to London's River Thames in ideally two years, instead of 10. The lido would add a communal, recreational space in the river for both swimmers and non-swimmers.
Design and publishing studio Epilogue plans on recreating Edwin A. Abbott's 1884 classic, Flatland -- but with extra perks. Aside the book's on-trend minimalist appearance, this version includes a 50-page visual appendix that further explores the text's concepts as well as a digital library of shapes and dimensions.
Visual Design in Action by Ladislav Sutnar - Facsimile edition
Designers & Books launched a Kickstarter today for a facsimile reissue of the 1961 Visual Design in Action by Czech graphic designer Ladislav Sutnar. Printed only once, the remaining copies of the book -- which discusses modern graphic design and information graphics -- are mostly found in libraries and private collections. The reissue would make the book available to the public.
Those who have the guts and probably the means to sport these vivid prints will capture the attention of those around them -- or the sun at the very least. Designed by The Crated and Print All Over Me, Photochromia is a streetwear collection featuring UV-reactive digital prints that depict STEAM concepts.
Help us build amazing architecture at Burning Man!
London-based postgrad design studio WeWantToLearn.net is determined to make another return to the Burning Man festival for 2015. This year, the studio proposed three designs that they're hoping can be brought to life in Nevada's Black Rock Desert.
Indiegogo - Los Angeles World's Fair
The Los Angeles World's Fair initiative is aiming to bring together the first World's Fair to the Greater L.A. region over the course of two years starting in 2022. Instead of a single site, the L.A. World’s Fair would have multiple pods and pavilions throughout the region along the new transit infrastructure. The Indiegogo campaign would fund the first pavilion.
AIAS Professional Advancement Support Scholarship (PASS)
The PASS intends to simplify the path towards licensure, while maintaining the license's rigor and value. Through this, the scholarship also aims to encourage young architects to begin working toward obtaining a license early in their career.
