Brazilian artist/designer Athos Bulcao passed away at the age of 90 this past Thursday at the Sarah Kubitschek Hospital in Brasilia, Brazil. Bulcão was best know for the architecturally-integrated interventions he produced in federal buildings of Brasilia, which were planned by Lucio Costas and designed by Oscar Niemeyer...
His works in Brasilia include the mosaics, screens and reliefs of the National Congress and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the geometric exterior of Brazilia's National Theater which sit between the disciplines of architecture, art and design. Bulcão's work in Brasilia, along with the works of Oscar Neimeyer, Roberto Burle-Marx, and Bruno Giorgi, define Brazil's Federal Modern style. His work is grossly underrepresented outside his native country.
