115 floors of condos for Chicago; to be known as "the Calatrava."
NYTimes reports that developer Christopher T. Carley plans to announce the $500 million project on Tuesday. The structure, tentatively called the Fordham Spire (but not according to Caltrava's wife), has immediately raised security concerns. A spire on top would reach about 2,000 feet, making the building the country's tallest. Donald Trump, true to spirit, already dismissed it as a "charade." It also "spirals." Read

jimmy of LWB has the snarchitecture comment of the day: A Calatrava-designed concrete and glass "drill bit"... How is that for Ideal proportions, Santiago?

Every city now needs its spiral building. Just like every city needs an arch, a geodesic dome and a tower with a rotating restaurant on top. Flavor of the month!

If anyone's been to Chicago, that's a terrible site for such a huge building. That and it's ugly. Do all architects strive to put long pointy things on top of their buildings? Look in the background, IBM plaza - great building, no pointy thing, Marina City - great buildings, no pointy things.

spirals, arches, domes...whatever. The next big trend? Personally, I'd love to see every city construct an terrifyingly enormous statue. Think: the colossus of rhodes or the statue of liberty (relocated to the city proper). A sublime anthropomorphic icon personifying the character and history of its specific metropolis.

You could drive under its legs when you enter the city or something...

I've just convinced myself that this is a truly great idea....More to come on my blog!

what, you don't like the pointy things?

see: http://library.thinkquest.org/20868/ang/woa/text5.htm

for marina towers with 2 cool 60's pointy things - the broadcasting towers for WLS, now removed. Goldberg rocked.

"A sublime anthropomorphic icon personifying the character and history of its specific metropolis."

So for Chicago would that be a guy with a scythe? Might send the wrong message to tourists...
