FIU School of Architecture and FIU By Design Make Innovative Partnership with Local Library

The City of Parkland asked the FIU School of Architecture and FIU By Design to create conceptual plans and drawings that depict different solutions for the  City of Parkland Library.

The current state of the library is about 13,000 square feet. The proposal created by FIU increases the area to 19,500 square feet.

Students and faculty developed ideas into a series of schematic design proposals that were presented to City officials and staff. The FIU team has paid close attention to the program-related objectives of the City's expansion of its library. These objectives include:

    • increasing the Children's Area by at least 30%

    • expanding the multi-purpose areas for adult and children and the flexibility of their use

    • incorporating quiet study rooms

    • redesigning the library's circulation/staff workroom space and improving interaction with the library customers

    • providing more storage in the work area

    • modernizing the facility with all new furniture and fixtures, incorporating mobility and flexibility

    • incorporating gallery space and a small café, as well as space for activities such as poetry readings, small group lectures, or performances.

    •

The FIU team has ensured that the City's objectives be made priority and has created its own set of objectives in response:

    • fulfilling all program objectives, as well as client and customer needs
    • providing a learning environment that is safe, efficient, innovative and fun
    • incorporating light and vegetation as a core element, merging interior with exterior while providing secure and comfortable outdoor spaces for reading and recreation
    • incorporating formal elements that refer to an equestrian lifestyle, as well as warm materials with a minimal and contemporary aesthetic.

On Wednesday, March 2nd, 2016, the FIU team presented its two schematic design proposals to the City Commission of Parkland. The team received positive feedback from the Mayor, City Commissioners, and members of the Parkland Friends of the Library.
