The Women in Construction Workshop Series reaches out to female students in construction and civil engineering from developing countries who show great potential of success as future teachers, mentors, and society leaders. These female students can further motivate other female or minority students to pursue degrees in STEM disciplines, especially in construction and civil engineering. The 2015 workshop was hosted by the University of Central Florida (UCF) in July, in partnership with two major universities in Brazil (University of Campinas) and China (Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University). FIU Professor of Architecture and CARTA Associate Dean of Faculty Development Shahin Vassigh was a keynote speaker at the 2015 Women in Construction Workshop. Professor Vassigh spoke about her career trajectory and about her shared insight and experiences that could help female students to move forward with a successful engineering or architecture career.
During the three-day workshop at UCF, participants engaged in a variety of group activities and seminars, which aimed to impart knowledge about the fundamentals of a successful career in academia or industry, ways to access and properly use the latest technology trends, utilizing a variety of information sources available on public domains, and developing interpersonal rapport in professional settings.
The Women in Construction Workshop was sponsored by the Engineering Information Foundation, The Safety Research using Simulation Center (SAFER-SIM), the UCF Civil, Environmental, and Construction Engineering Department, the UCF Office of Diversity and Inclusion, and UCF’s Decision Support, Information Modeling, and Automation Laboratory (DESIMAL).
