Alumnus Hai Zhang ’01 (M.Arch) is one artist in the first group of 17 to be represented by nineteensixtyeight.

Zhang was born in Kunming, China in 1976.  In 2000, after his graduation of the college in Chongqing, he moved to the US.  Since then, he has lived in Alabama, Miami, Washington, DC and New York City.  Before he was able to devote himself to photographic work, he worked for the renowned architect, Rafael Vinoly, for several years. Zhang was a fellow of Rafael Vinoly Architecture Research Fellowship from 2009 to 2010. (Source: Hai Zhang Photography)

Zhang is interested in photography as a vital tool to investigate the context, whether alien or familiar.  While he has dedicated a great deal of energy and time to photograph in China and the Deep South of the US, he has also traveled to Costa Rica, Russia and Southeast Asia for projects. Zhang is also interested in making photography books not for a presentation but for an integral investigative process to examine the subjects and photography itself.  He has been applying the permutation and variation in book-making for his short- and long-term projects as well as subject matters. (Source: Hai Zhang Photography)

Zhang was nominated for the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize 2014. His works have been included in significant exhibitions surveying the photography in modern and contemporary Chinese social landscape in Bursa International Photo Festival, Turkey (2012) and Chobi Mela VII, Bangladesh (2013) – both curated by Robert Pledge. Since 2005, he has participated in several influential group exhibitions examining the immigrants’ social identity in a foreign country, including Aphasia (2005) at the Asian American Art Centre, New York and America through A Chinese Lens (2012) at the Museum of Chinese in America, New York. (Source:Hai Zhang Photography)

Zhang’s new representative, nineteensixtyeight, is based in London and founded by art and business consultant Isabella Brancolini. nineteensixtyeight is a curated platform dedicated to the discussion and dissemination of contemporary photography. It is an innovative space that transcends the static confines of a magazine or gallery, offering unique depth and dynamism in the presentation of collectible works. (Source:nineteensixtyeight)

The revolutionary year from which the name originates was emblematic of a world in flux, characterized by a palpable tension between destruction and creation, conflict and solidarity. Photography was setting global events in motion just as those events were in turn influencing the visual language of the times. In the spirit of the era, nineteensixtyeight strives to bring contemporary and historical issues into focus through evocative combinations of image and text, challenging traditional conceptions of narrativity and acknowledging that while a picture may be worth a thousand words, the story a photograph tells is never singular. (Source:nineteensixtyeight)

Each section of the platform is distinctive in its approach to the material, featuring the work of artists and writers who are pushing the boundaries of established genres, and providing original insights into the works and their greater contexts. (Source: nineteensixtyeight)
