On Saturday, February 6th, the FIU College of Architecture + The Arts | Miami Beach Urban Studios hosted Body Architecture: 3D Print Revolution, the second volume of the Spring 2016 symposium series.
The 3D printing revolution is transforming the discipline of architecture. Not only are architects now 3D printing buildings, but some are also working at a smaller scale, 3D printing “Body Architectures” in the form of jewelry and clothing. This symposium brought together some of the most talented young architectural designers in order to explore this new field of design research, and celebrate the fact that the Urban Studios is the first design studio in the world to provide MakerBot 3D printers on every studio desk.
The Body Architecture: 3D Print Revolution symposium included a jewelry design workshop. The workshop offered tutorials by three guest designers in jewelry design using the softwares Maya, Grasshopper, and Processing. Students worked in pairs to design items of jewelry that will be printed using the Urban Designer’s unique array of MakerBot 3D printers and exhibited after the symposium.
The symposium also featured a panel discussion of participants who showed their extraordinary designs, outlining not only the technical challenges behind the process, but also the often highly sophisticated research behind the designs themselves. This panel included
