Winners of the 2017 Tile Award competition were recently announced awarding three projects for creative and advanced ideas illustrating varied design possibilities of ceramic tile. The contest was open to architects and interior designers under the age of 38, and called for the design of new and unconventional interiors with ceramic tiles.
A total of 63 projects from 20 countries were submitted. Of these, nine interpretations on the subject were selected in the first round for further developed in September 2017, during a workshop trip in Iceland to work our further details for realization.
The final three prize winners were:
Of the final winners, Transmittance-Color Curtain by JDAP features a fabric-like curtain blown by the wind and formed by delicate strands of ceramic baguettes pivoted around tilted axes. The curtain forms a space suffused with light and color, allowing people to move through the pavilion surrounded briefly by this unique environment. Light passes through the spaces in between the baguettes and bounces off the glazed surfaces as colors play off each other creating a memorable sensorial experience that displaces the sense of reality for those within.
Transmittance-Color Curtain is an urban chameleon in constant flux generated by the people it interacts with. The goal of this project was to turn a seemingly rigid material of ceramic tile into a pliable and fluid form. The Curtain acts as an interactive surface. Visitors are encouraged to reach out and spin the baguettes, each having various color faces, to form patterns and color themes as they please. The pavilion may sit within a city park, an urban plaza, a stark desert landscape, or a crowded exhibition ground. This design creates its own interior environment and constantly shifts when viewed from the outside.
