What constitutes an anchor business for redevelopment in the San Francisco Mission neighborhood? Well, apparently some residents don't think that Kink (NOT SAFE FOR WORK!) dot com will be a good neighbor... So, Porn purveyor seeks to reassure Mission...says the Examiner
Who would have guessed that the fetish porn movie company would have 14.5 million sitting around to buy the San Francisco Armory building, an almost hundred-year-old National Guard castle in the middle of the city, to film BDSM? Over the years, residents have opposed server farms and condos from taking over the gigantic structure that has sat abandoned since the 70s. Check out the size of the drill court! But my favorite coverage so far has been a letter in yesterday's Chronicle, worth copying in full & a clever critique of urban planning included:
Editor -- For years, our little residential/light-industrial neighborhood in the shadow of the huge Central Freeway ramp has been struggling for an identity.
Today in our neighborhood you can choose your weed from one of three pot clubs (one per block on Valencia from Market Street), get a tattoo, have your lip pierced, then round off the evening with a "massage" at the Palm Tree Spa, which was featured in the movie "I am a sex addict.''
With the coming of kink.com to the Armory, residents and visitors alike can check out a dungeon or two and perhaps become a porn star. What luck for us north Mission neighbors, an identity has formed around us without a 10-year planning process!

Say the pornographers: "This is going to be very exciting,'' said porn director James Mogul. "What an opportunity.'' In a Web-based pornography distributor, buys historic S.F. building to film its bondage movies
Still salivating to know more about this exciting formula for redevelopment? SFist: Meet the Kinks ; check out this amazing photoset on flickr posted by the kinky neighbors themselves! (kind of tame, though).
