"Can Florida's Panhandle be saved from responsible development?"
I recommend an incredible investigative report by Hal Herring on the plight of the wetlands of Florida and the political clout of the St Joe company (no more and no less than "joe dot com"). Read about making sand and pulp into green bucks, saddling up to New Urbanism to legitimize land speculation and build your real estate empire, the plotting of an airport in the remotest of areas, and now the rise of something called "new ruralism". (It's all in Miller-McCune, a great little non-profit publication on cutting-edge research out of Santa Barbara.)

New Ruralism what a term.
Development of old-time north Florida is a real problem though. What is really evident even in places further east is that development over the last 10-15 years has dramatically affected water tables, system quality.
The springs of my youth are not as clear, or clean as they once were. Fortunately counties like mine have begun to focuse on conservation of the old-time Florida ecology. Easements, and programs such as Florida Forever like have proven to be needed tools.
Still the conflation of the above to a new urbanism in rural clothing is a strong warning. I also find it ironic given the very literal antagonism evident in the labels rural and urban in this context.
