Stephen Bayley reviews the first comprehensive exhibition in England of this genius Frenchman's work.
Bayley writes that,
"Prouvé felt you could not call yourself a designer unless you knew how to make the things you drew. The look of something was dictated by the logic of its materials and the patterns of the forces connecting them. He thought of construction as a language; for him design was not frivolous novelty but the grammar and punctuation of manufacturing industry."

thanks. Hard to belive its his first exhibition. Certainly a mechanic much ahead of his time, and his attention to mechanical detail seems to foreshadow the supermodernism of today.
Correct me if im wrong, but he executed components of buildings, such as windo and curtain walls for others' plans?
wait, there is no way this is the first exhibit. i know i've seen a catalog of a prouve exhibit somewhere.
also, i like the image of his family in a jeep, while don judd strolled around in his custom defender 110.
@ Holz,
It might not be. The Guardian article says it is the first one...Maybe they meant in England?
i just don't imagine that one of the greatest designers of the 20th c. had to wait 50 years for an exhibit. is he that overlooked?
from the vitra website:
In conception, this first comprehensive and systematic touring exhibition on the furniture and architecture
Holz,,,,
If i remember readin the article correctly the Vitra exhibit went on tour and is now the one at the Design Museum in England.
yeah, that's what i was referring to.
iso it's the first comprehensive exhibit? or the first comprehensive touring exhibit. i need to find the original german release, it didn't translate well.
i have a book at home about him - Im certain he had exhibets during his lifetime, although not comprehensive.
Thanks for posting this - It gives me reason to dig the book out of storage.
