There are other bits of the park that are worth a glance...the Kapoor 'Bean'[in SBC Plaza] still undercover, Kathryn Gustafson's fountain/landscape element still under construction just south of the 'bowl' [Shoulder Garden], Crown Fountain [by Ando and Krueck and Sexton] and 2 Piano Workshop stair towers that adjacent to the future Art Institute addition. An interactive map is at http://www.pbcchicago.com/subhtml/millennium_park.asp unfortunately, the design teams are missing from the desciptions [as usual]
the grid frame around the open seating serves to carry the speakers - the acoustics [without crowds] was great.
the proscenium opening has a 60' full height sliding glass door, a photo of which is on the following site; http://www.millenniumpark.net/
the metal ribbon bridge has already been broken into by either a cyclist or skateboarder. the metal handrail [if you want to call it that, its about a 1/2" diam bar that Gehry's office was forced to add because the original detail was just the sharp panel edges], is unbelievably hot to touch [this was at 4pm or so].
the theater frame is very heavy considering it is only taking deadload and 40psf wind load. there is a great care taken by gehry's office to get the details right.
the panels here are stainless[due to cost], not titanium and really lack the magic connection and disconnection to the skyline that projects such as bilbao offers.
as you could see there is no back side [again cost savings ]to the building [although there is a dance theater by Beeby that is behind and below ground, sharing back of house elements]
underneath this whole park is a 2 level underground parking structure [and bicyle parking structure]. photos of what was there before are found at http://hometown.aol.com/citypan/index.html
