PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

Start with 3 spatial ideas I developed through phase 1, I chose market as my program of use to test those spatial ideas.

This project investigates the possibility of using pinwheel* arrangement of walls to create spaces of various characteristics, as well as the potential to create “soft” transition between different spaces. With the similar arrangement, some spaces appear to be more “solid” in contrast with the other. Smaller spaces are embedded within the frame of larger enclosures. The unexpected turnings always indicate an adjacent space, which triggers the anticipation.

Program of use_(Im)permanent market

The spaces with large openings on the north and south sides are defined by thick wall/space which contain specific programs. While the rest of the market remains as systematically organized shopping area, these spaces are interruptions of showing cases. They are at the same time both viewing and being viewed. This is an empty space of events, tasting new flavors of fresh goods, celebrating harvest or festivals. The journey in a supermarket is usually with targets and fast, but with interruptions, it could be full of wandering, lingering, searching, when a turn is made, a threshold is crossed, a path is shifted; a hunch for something new is about to appear at the next glimpse. The spaces in the walls are suitable places for the serving programs, while remained partially hidden, they serve well for the leftover empty spaces they formed.
