Arizona State Hospital
Civil and Adolescent Behavioral Health Hospital
Phoenix, Arizona
Planning and design for a 200-bed, 220,000 sf facility that capitalizes on the area’s desert climate to externalize the hospital’s pedestrian circulation, extending the patient’s therapy into landscaped areas of respite. This expansion of patient environments reinforces a care program that helps patients “graduate” from the facility and into the community. The complex is comprised of three residential buildings, two patient care buildings, and a common area that includes a fitness center, library, coffee shop, clothing store, educational facilities, and chapel. The facility projects a sense of “normalization” and the Rehabilitation Mall provides patients with opportunities for social interaction.
