Beirut Marina

The controversy over the site of Solidere’s Western Marina and the rivalries among its co-neighbors only reflect the preponderance of this
location, gateway to Beirut’s Central District both from the sea and from the city. The extensive nature of the program of functions illustrates
the importance of the role Beirut’s Marina is destined to hold: The prime docking point for luxury private yachts, an exclusive club and a leisure
destination along the sea promenade for diners, strollers: all natural facilities for a seaside town, but ones which Beirut has not enjoyed for far
too long.
When Solidere launched the design competition between six local and international consultants, it was keen on reflecting these characteristics
within the proposals it would receive; it was also keen to ensure that the Marina was not isolated from the rest of the city, and that a pedestrian
link be maintained between them. The elegant uni-pole suspension bridge proposed by LACECO was destined to be the calling card of the
Marina, complementing with its cables and teak finish the marine environment conveyed within the two main quays, the Belvedere and the
three-storey Yacht Club.
The proposal provides an original solution to mask the nine meter high breakwater and its concrete structures which cover the horizon along
the north-western rim of the marina, in the form of a linear cascading water feature, driven by wind powered turbines sitting atop the breakwater.
The breakwater’s character evolves from an obstruction to a staging ground for nature’s basic elements (wind, water and light), and an
integrated backdrop to the Marina is created.
