Baalbeck Sports City is intended to house, in addition to a 20,000 seat stadium, an equestrian competition center with associated facilities,
a therapeutic center and a hotel. The location of this Sports City complements the regional development of sports centers in Lebanon; within
this new facility, Baalbeck was planned to host some of the games of the Asian Football Finals of the year 2000. However, funding was not
available in time. Eventually, the Municipality of Baalbeck, upon completion of the Tender Documents, revised its requirements downwards, to
a 9,000 seat stadium; in addition, a revised land allocation scheme was established.
The revised studies were completed in 2001, with further updates in 2003; the construction tender process was launched in August 2003.
