But a Temple to what exactly? Nicolai calls the new Freedom/Drawing Center "A Temple of Contemplation and Conflict." Can it also be "a Temple for Contemplating Freedom"? "Liberty and Art"?
Of note: if you thought that the bathtub was starting to look too crowded (with the Freedom Temple butting up against the Caltrava bird and the hypothetical Gehry building), Nicolai reveals that because the current plans do not take into account the additional 40,000 square feet of mechanical space demanded by the Port Authority, the renderings unveiled yesterday are a fiction of sorts; the building would be a full story and a half taller than shown. I think freedom fries help us contemplate freedom enough. Look at the original design by Libeskind, those weren't crystals they were freedom fries of glass!
It also seems to me that McDonald's is prehaps Americas greatest temple for what freedom means for our culture and belief system. They should allow McDonalds to secure the site and build the real freedom tower with golden archs and all thus fulfilling the needs of every american, a 10,000 calorie diet.
